Start with the width, depth and usable height of your plant shelf or growing space. Keep a note of these measurements while comparing lamps, so you can check both the fixture dimensions and its published lighting map.
Read the measurements together
PPF, expressed in µmol/s, describes a lamp's total photon output within a stated wavelength range. PPFD, expressed in µmol/m²/s, describes the light reaching a surface. These are different measurements. See SANlight's explanation of lighting terms.
A PPFD map is most useful when it gives the measurement height, covered area and readings across that area. Compare the edges as well as the centre. Check the wavelength range: conventional PAR measurements cover 400–700 nm, while extended measurements can use a different range. Apogee explains PAR measurements and units.
Check the complete equipment list
- Record the exact model and revision, electrical input power, dimensions and manufacturer installation clearances.
- Check whether the power supply, mains cable, suspension and controller are included.
